English Skills
Good standing in English Skills or English as a Second Language (ESL) means the student has achieved a grade of P, MP, or F.
P – Satisfactory completion of all courses. Student passes on to the next level of English Skills, ESL, or into ENG 099 or ENG 101.
MP – Measurable progress. Sufficient progress has been made to indicate that the student should be able to complete the requirements of the course within the subsequent semester.
F – Fail, Repetition of the course is necessary
Students may be dismissed from the College if:
- They have not completed English Skills or ESL after four full-time semesters or six part-time semesters.
- They have not progressed to the next higher course level in English Skills or ESL after two semesters at the same level.
- They have not met the requirements for satisfactory academic progress in credit courses at Rockland Community College. Time extensions may be permitted on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of the English Skills/ESL faculty if students are in good standing and are progressing.
Students will be notified in writing by the Dean of Student Development if they are dismissed. They will not be permitted to register for classes until they are re-admitted. An appeal for Waiver of Dismissal may be made in writing to the Faculty Counselor for Academic Interventions.
A dismissed student is eligible to apply for re-admittance after two semesters have elapsed (not including Winter or Summer sessions). The decision to re-admit is based on an interview with the Coordinator of Academic Interventions, a reassessment of the student’s skills, approval of the student’s plan of study by an English Skills or an ESL advisor, and final review by the Coordinator of Academic Interventions.
Allied Health
The College currently offers two Allied Health career options: Emergency Medical Services and Occupational Therapy Assistant. Admission criteria and program requirements for these programs are extensive and specific.
Nursing
The Nursing Program entrance criteria and program requirements are extensive and specific. All prospective Nursing students must consult Nursing: A Program Guide for complete information.
All students in core nursing courses, whether full or part-time, must be advised by a member of the nursing faculty prior to registration for the next course in the nursing sequence.
Fieldwork or Clinical Experience/Health Requirements
Transportation to fieldwork locations is the student’s responsibility. Students must have a physical examination before starting fieldwork or clinical experience. Hepatitis vaccinations are recommended. Proof of vaccination, blood titers, or appropriate signed waiver and physical examinations must be submitted to the Technical Assistant for Health Assessment, Record Office, prior to participation in clinical rotations. Specific programs may require additional immunizations or screening. All students born on or after January 1, 1957 must provide proof of immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella. Students are responsible bor insuring that their health records are current.
Students receive instruction about the Occupation Safety and Health Administration’s blood borne pathogen regulations in their courses. A fee for liability insurance is required at registration for all fieldwork or practicals.
Course Work
Allied Health Students must take liberal arts courses, including English Composition, in addition to the Allied Health curriculum. Degree program requires three credits in physical education.
To complete a degree or certificate program, the student must earn a grade of “C” (75%) or better in all courses in the area of study, except for the Paramedic courses (PAR 200 through PAR 207) which require a minimum of B- (80%). EMT 101 and 102 must be taken consecutively.
Students are allowed only two opportunities to successfully complete each major course in their disciplines. Although a lower grade in these major courses can be used for other degree electives, it may not be applied to a certificate or degree in Allied Health. Failure in any combination of three courses will result in dismissal from the program.
Students will be required to demonstrate competency in all previous courses if more than 24 months have elapsed between Allied Health major courses.
Students must earn a minimum of “C” in all Science courses. In addition, no more than 7 years may elapse from the time Science courses were completed and the Allied Health curriculum begun. This includes transfer Science courses. The Science Program Coordinator must evaluate transfer Science courses.

All students must take the English and Mathematics placement examinations prior to any Allied Health course. Pre- and co-requisites for specific programs and courses are strictly enforced.
