SUMMARY:The Thomas J. Moran - Crossroads Ceili
DESCRIPTION:Location: Cultural Arts Theatre\nAdmission: $10 \nMembers of the Contemporary Music Ensemble\nIn celebration of Irish Heritage Month\, the Visual and Performing Arts present the annual Crossroads Ceili. This event will feature performances in the form of song and dance\, celebrating Irish Culture! There may even be some audience participation requested! She dresses as a middle-class woman of the late 1700s in accurately researched garments as she describes and demonstrates the historical development of Irish wool & flax (linen) spinning\, from Neolithic times to the present\, on the spinning wheel & drop spindles. The 1886 spinning wheel she uses is an upright double-drive wheel\, sometimes known as an “Irish Castle wheel.” Questions during her demonstration are encouraged and welcomed\, and attendees may try their own hand at spinning wool on a drop spindle. \nLight refreshments will be served following the event.

The original book was a collaborative effort by Guy Bolton and P. G. Wodehouse\, revised considerably by the team of Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. The story concerns madcap antics aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London. Billy Crocker is a stowaway in love with heiress Hope Harcourt\, who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and Public Enemy Number 13\, “Moonface” Martin\, aid Billy in his quest to win Hope. Songs introduced that later became pop and jazz standards are “Anything Goes”\, “You’re the Top”\, “All Through the Night”\, and “I Get a Kick Out of You”. \nAnything Goes premiered on Broadway on November 21\, 1934 at the Alvin Theatre\, where it ran for 420 performances\, becoming the fourth longest-running musical of the 1930s. A revised version of the show opened off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theatre on May 15\, 1962\, starring Eileen Rodgers as Reno Sweeney and Hal Linden as Billy Crocker. In 1987\, Lincoln Center Theater produced an updated version of the show. Opening at Broadway’s Vivian Beaumont Theater on October 19\, 1987\, the show starred Patti LuPone\, Howard McGillin and Bill McCutcheon\, won the Tony Award for Best Revival\, and played for 784 performances. \nIn 2011\, the Beaumont version was revived at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Broadway\, starring Sutton Foster and Joel Grey. Once again\, Anything Goes won the Tony for Best Musical Revival\, and the production ran for 521 performances. \n“Anything Goes exists to put a daffy grin on your face…if you’re looking for sheer escape\, this is your ticket!” – Nelson Pressley\, The Washington Post \n“Cole Porter songs and tap-dancing sailors? What’s not to love? …The show is so packed with daffy physical shtick\, comical dialogue and those still dazzlingly clever Cole Porter lyrics that it’s impossible not to surrender.” – David Rooney\, The Hollywood Reporter \n“Anything Goes is Cole Porter at his best.” – Susan Brall\, DC Metro Arts

All participating graduating students and guests must register by Tuesday\, April 21\, 2026. We also invite faculty\, staff\, friends\, and family to participate in the celebration and support our students! \nAll Lavender Graduates will receive a: \n\nLavender Certificate\nLavender Graduation Cord\n\nFor more information contact Steven Marks at steven.marks@sunyrockland.edu or (845) 574-4390. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What is a Lavender Graduation Ceremony? \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Lavender Graduation is an annual ceremony conducted on numerous university/college campuses to honor lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer\, asexual\, intersex\, questioning\, and ally students and to acknowledge their achievements and contributions to the college. The Lavender Graduation Ceremony was created by Dr. Ronni Sanlo at the University of Michigan in 1995. Today\, there are thousands of Lavender Graduation Ceremonies at Colleges and Universities nationwide. Graduating students are invited to take part in the celebration. \n \n \n \n \n \n Why a Lavender Graduation Ceremony? \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Lavender Graduation is a cultural celebration that recognizes LGBTQIA+ students and acknowledges their achievements and contributions to the university. Through such recognition\, LGBTQIA+ students may leave the university with a positive last experience of the institution\, thereby encouraging them to become involved mentors for current students\, as well as contributing alumni. Lavender Graduation is an event in which LGBTQIA+ students share their hopes and dreams and are officially recognized by the institution for their leadership and their successes and achievements. \n \n \n \n \n \n What is the significance of Lavender? \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Lavender is important to LGBTQIA+ history! It is a color combination of the pink triangle that gay men were forced to wear in concentration camps and the black triangle designating lesbians as political prisoners in Nazi Germany. The LGBTQIA+ civil rights movement took these symbols of hatred and combined them to make symbols and colors of pride and community.
