SUMMARY:Lavender Graduation Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Location: Nelson Mandela Room (Student Union\, Room 3214) \nRockland Community College’s 2026 Lavender Graduation Ceremony will be held on Tuesday\, April 28\, 2026 at 5:30 pm in the Student Union 3214\, Nelson Mandela Room. All participating graduating students and guests must register by Tuesday\, April 21\, 2026. Seating may be limited\, participating graduates will be prioritized over guests. \nRegister\nLavender Graduation is a graduation ceremony celebrating our LGBTQIA+ student graduates and allies\, and their contributions to Rockland Community College from the 2025-2026 academic year. We also invite faculty\, staff\, friends\, and family to participate in the celebration and support our students! \nAll Lavender Graduates will receive a: \n\nLavender Certificate\nLavender Graduation Cord\n\nFor more information contact Steven Marks at steven.marks@sunyrockland.edu or (845) 574-4390. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What is a Lavender Graduation Ceremony? \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Lavender Graduation is an annual ceremony conducted on numerous university/college campuses to honor lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer\, asexual\, intersex\, questioning\, and ally students and to acknowledge their achievements and contributions to the college. The Lavender Graduation Ceremony was created by Dr. Ronni Sanlo at the University of Michigan in 1995. Today\, there are thousands of Lavender Graduation Ceremonies at Colleges and Universities nationwide. Graduating students are invited to take part in the celebration. \n \n \n \n \n \n Why a Lavender Graduation Ceremony? \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Lavender Graduation is a cultural celebration that recognizes LGBTQIA+ students and acknowledges their achievements and contributions to the university. Through such recognition\, LGBTQIA+ students may leave the university with a positive last experience of the institution\, thereby encouraging them to become involved mentors for current students\, as well as contributing alumni. Lavender Graduation is an event in which LGBTQIA+ students share their hopes and dreams and are officially recognized by the institution for their leadership and their successes and achievements. \n \n \n \n \n \n What is the significance of Lavender? \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Lavender is important to LGBTQIA+ history! It is a color combination of the pink triangle that gay men were forced to wear in concentration camps and the black triangle designating lesbians as political prisoners in Nazi Germany. The LGBTQIA+ civil rights movement took these symbols of hatred and combined them to make symbols and colors of pride and community.

SUMMARY:Roger Rees Award Nominations
DESCRIPTION:Rockland Community College and the Visual and Performing Arts department are again proud to partner with the Roger Rees Awards for 2026! \nThe Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance recognizes distinction in student performance and outstanding achievement in high school musical theatre programs in the NYC area. This program was formerly known as The Gershwin Awards. The Broadway Education Alliance is the fiscal sponsor of The Roger Rees Awards. \nRCC has been chosen to be one of the three host colleges for the nominating process of the Roger Rees Awards. \nhttps://rogerreesawards.com/ \n \n“This idea of young people showing their acting chops and being recognized for it is something that he would have adored. So\, I hope everybody who is competing for the Roger Rees Awards understands this kind of lifelong commitment to trying to be better at what we\, who work in the theater\, try to do. What Roger’s life is a great example of is that you never stop learning\, you never stop working\, you never stop striving to be better. These kids here today are on that path\, and if Roger’s name is on that path as a signpost\, then Heaven is happier today because he’s up there pointing down going\, ‘yeah\, yeah\, yeah\, keep going\, keep going\, keep at it\, just keep at it.’” – Rick Elice \nEach year the award committee chooses three institutions with whom to partner and host nomination auditions. \nWhile at each institution\, the participants will go through a half-day process of checking-in\, warming up\, splitting into two groups\, the first of which will go to a holding area to prepare for their audition\, while the other group participates in a workshop. \nThis year they are doing something new and exciting that we proposed and instead of a traditional workshop in Dance\, the nominees will be engaged in a theatrical stage combat workshop with Lightsabers (even though May the 4th is the following day)! After the 90-minute workshop\, the groups will then switch and the first group to audition will engage in the workshop and the other group will prepare to audition. There are two morning sessions and two afternoon sessions! \nThe entire process will take approximately 8-9 hours in total on Sunday\, May 3. We will be using the upper atrium\, the Cultural Arts Theatre\, the Black Box Studio\, and the Green Room of the theatre. \nThis all culminates in an extravagant award ceremony in Manhattan in May. \nThe nomination process and workshop are closed to the public.

SUMMARY:Art Show: CJ vs. Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Location: Brooke Evans Gallery (Cultural Arts Center) \nChristina Jami Alvarado returns to Rockland Community College for RCC’s Unity for Community event on May 4th with CJ vs Cancer\, an awareness exhibit featuring her digital portrait series created throughout her cancer journey. A former RCC student\, Christina credits the college’s art department with helping shape the trajectory of her life. More than 20 years later\, she returns not as a student\, but as a woman shaped by lived experience—carrying a message of hardship\, resilience\, transformation\, and truth. \nBefore her diagnosis\, Christina built a career as a producer and production manager\, traveling the country and leading large-scale productions for major global brands. She was living her dream\, earning a six-figure salary WITH health benefits and thriving in a fast-paced industry she loved. Then\, everything shifted. In her late 30s\, after a dramatic decline in her health\, Christina spent two years seeking answers—only to be dismissed\, misdiagnosed\, and overlooked. By the time a visible lump led to further testing\, the cancer had already progressed to Stage 4\, spreading to her bones\, alongside a separate Stage 1 colon cancer diagnosis. \nThe aftermath was life-altering: the loss of her career\, financial stability\, and independence—replaced by ongoing treatment and an often invisible disability. Now two years into living with an incurable disease\, Christina continues to navigate the reality that returning to her former life has not yet been possible. Her last production credit was the 2024 Met Gala. But through all of it—loss\, uncertainty\, and upheaval—art remained. \nThis exhibit is not just a reflection of survival\, but a call to action: advocate for your health\, advocate for your life\, and always advocate for the arts. \nMore about Unity in Community \n
