A Jazz Trio Tribute to Wayne Shorter

February 25 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm EST

Location: Cultural Arts Center Atrium

Wayne Shorter is one of the most celebrated jazz saxophonists and composers of all time. Emerging as a featured soloist in 1959 under Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Shorter earned a reputation for his exceptional abilities as a performer. In the same year, Wayne released his first album as a bandleader featuring his own music. As a composer, Wayne is noted for his unique and expressive harmonies and his ability to solo effortlessly over these works. Wayne’s solo records of the 1960s are still some of the most celebrated and studied jazz albums today, working with legendary jazz musicians including McCoy Tyner (piano), Herbie Hancock (piano), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Elvin Jones (drums), Tony Williams (drums), Reggie Workman (bass), and Ron Carter (bass), among many, many others. In 1964, Wayne joined Miles Davis’ infamous Second Great Quintet, performing and recording with Miles and company throughout the 1960s. Wayne’s success continued in the 1970s, pioneering the sound of jazz-fusion as a bandleader and lead composer for Weather Report. In the 2000’s, Wayne joined forces with young jazz greats Brian Blade (drums), Danielo Perez (piano), and John Patitucci (bass) to create some of the most expressive work of his career. Wayne Shorter continued to compose and perform until he passed away in 2023 at the age of 89. His childlike spirit and relentless soul has left a profound impression on American music.

To honor the life and work of Wayne Shorter, a special jazz trio tribute performance will take place in the Atrium of the RCC Cultural Arts Center. The performance will be held on Tuesday, February 25 during common hour, from 12:30-1:30pm. The jazz trio is lead by Adjunct Faculty member Peter Fiore, alongside Taylor Field (saxophone) and Jesse Lynch (piano).
