Location: Join us in the Dr. Edmund Gordon Ellipse (Technology Center, Room 8180) or register via Zoom
Speaker: Dr. Jarvis R. Givens
The African American Historical Society of Rockland County proudly welcomes Dr. Jarvis R. Givens, Professor of Education and Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University, for our 2026 Black History Month keynote program.
Dr. Givens is the author of Fugitive Pedagogy: Carter G. Woodson and the Art of Black Teaching and co-founder of the Black Teacher Archives, a national effort dedicated to preserving the intellectual and pedagogical traditions of Black educators.
The conversation will center on his new book to be released in February, I’ll Make Me a World: The 100-Year Journey of Black History Month. Drawing on archival research, personal reflection, and the voices of Black educators and students, the book traces the evolution of Black History Month from its 1926 founding to its enduring place in public life.
