The Death of King Shotaway – Birth of the African Grove Theater

February 13 @ 7:30 pm EST

Location: Cultural Arts Theater

A Two Act Drama by Award-Winning Playwright Samuel Harps.

Rockland Community College is proud to present The Death of King Shotaway, the powerful true story of the first all black theater company established in New York in 1821. The African Grove Theater was also the first to stage Shakespeare’s Othello with a black actor.

This dramatic presentation represents the play’s first full staging since it promptly closed in 2020 due to the pandemic. The production is being performed by 13 members of Shades Repertory Theater, a Rockland based theater company established in 2002 by Harps, who also directs the play.

The production is being presented for One Performance Only on Wednesday, February 13th, 2025 @ 7:30 p.m. at the Cultural Arts Center at Rockland Community College. Free to the public.
