Hispanic Heritage Month - Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future
Welcome to Hispanic Heritage Month at RCC
As the Hispanic population in the U.S. has grown significantly in recent decades, Hispanics now constitute the largest racial or ethnic minority group in the country. This demographic shift has given rise to the prominence of Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). Defined as accredited, degree-granting, public or private nonprofit higher education institutions with 25% or more total Hispanic undergraduate student enrollment, HSIs play a crucial role in providing academic support and diverse educational programs for their students. In 2024, there are 701 HSIs nationwide, including Rockland Community College.
From September 15 to October 15, Rockland Community College is coming alive with music, stories, flavors, and traditions as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a time to honor the history, culture, and contributions of more than 20 Hispanic countries and to recognize the many ways these traditions continue to inspire the future.
RCC is proud to be a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), meaning at least 25 percent of our undergraduate students identify as Hispanic. We are part of a growing movement of 701 colleges and universities across the country that support student success, cultural pride, and opportunities for all.
This year’s theme, Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future, is about coming together as a community, celebrating our shared history, and embracing the creativity and resilience that will carry us forward. Throughout the month, you can experience exciting events that will let you taste, hear, see, feel, and learn more about Hispanic culture in ways that are fun, inspiring, and unforgettable.

A medida que la población hispana en los Estados Unidos ha crecido significativamente en las últimas décadas, los hispanos constituyen ahora el grupo minoritario racial o étnico más grande del país. Este cambio demográfico ha dado lugar a la prominencia de las Instituciones de Educación Superior que Sirven a Hispanos (HSIs, por sus siglas en inglés). Definidas como instituciones acreditadas, públicas o privadas sin fines de lucro que otorgan títulos y que tienen un 25% o más de estudiantes universitarios hispanos matriculados, las HSIs desempeñan un papel crucial al ofrecer apoyo académico y programas educativos diversos para sus estudiantes.
