About the Certified Fiber Optic Technician Program

Fiber Optics Technician Course; Specialist in Testing, Maintenance, and Splicing.

The Fiber Optic Technician certification is the primary FOA certification for fiber optic technicians. CFOTs have the broad knowledge, skills and abilities in fiber optics, which can be applied to many jobs in design, installation, operations, and applications using fiber optic communications. The program also includes assistance with resume writing, interview preparation and job placement.

This program prepares the student to earn the following three-part industry certifications:

  • Certified Fiber Optic Technician – introduces you to industry standards governing FTTD (Fiber To The Desk), FTTH (Fiber To The Home, LAN/WAN fiber networks), essential fusion, and mechanical splicing.
  • Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing and Maintenance – provides a comprehensive understanding of ANSI/TIA/EIA-526-(7)A, OTDR fundamentals and uses, OTDR vs. Insertion Loss Testing, Return Loss Testing, and Attenuation testing using the Power Source and Light Meter.
  • Fiber Optics Specialist in Splicing – learn industry-specific standards of high-performance splicing.

Prerequisites

  • A valid NYS Driver’s License is required
  • Must be at least 18 years old
