About the Certified EMT Program

The Emergency Medical Technician program leads to New York State Certification as an EMT-Basic. Students are trained to provide care in life-threatening or potentially life-threatening conditions, and to prevent further harm before a patient is moved or transported. Students complete a rigorous course including didactic and practical instruction as required by New York State. Students who successfully complete the course and pass the final written and practical exam will be eligible to take the New York State Certification Exam on the last day of the program. The program also includes assistance in resume writing, interview preparation, and job placement.

This program prepares student to earn an industry certification as a New York Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B)

A valid NYS Driver’s License is required; must be 18 years or older

Workforce Development Registration Instructions

Credit for Prior Learning

Students who hold a current certification are eligible to earn college credits through credit for prior learning. A fee of 40% of tuition per credit is charged for the credit and students do not need to take the class.

Course Description: 
Medical terminology is the framework for effective communication among all levels of health care workers. The language used in medicine and healthcare will be studied to include word roots, prefixes, and suffixes as well as proper pronunciation, spelling, abbreviations, and word building. An overview of bodily systems, structure and functions, diagnostic and procedural terms, and terms related to illness/disease and health/wellness will be covered.

HLT 11000 - Exploring Careers in Healthcare

Course Description: 
This course explores a variety of options available for careers in the healthcare industry. Students will be exposed to a broad range go roles and will discuss the scope of practice of the variety of positions they will encounter as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. Students will be prepared to evaluate career options that best need their interests and career goals. Guest lecturers will be utilized to augment the scope of many specialized roles within a variety of healthcare settings.
