Challenge Exams

Challenge Exams are used to earn credit by passing the equivalent of a final exam, competency or course placement. Credit can be earned in any area that RCC can prepare and administer a suitable examination or assessment; some courses are excluded. A challenge exam is an opportunity for a student to demonstrate college-level learning through course-specific institutional examination or skill demonstration designed by college faculty who teach the course.

You may earn equivalent course credits for prior learning by taking an exam that demonstrates you have met course outcomes. Examinations may be written, oral, demonstration or a combination of all three. Examinations are evaluated by the Program Director, School Dean, faculty member or designated subject matter expert. Credit is recorded on the student’s transcript and identified with “CPL” instead of a grade. Students who plan to transfer should check with their incoming institution to ensure credit for prior learning is accepted.

Submit documentation in the RCC Credit Predictor to find out if you may be eligible to earn credit.

NUR 10300 – Calculations For Pharmacology Challenge Exam
Students admitted to the Nursing program are required to take NUR 10300 Calculations for Pharmacology. Nursing students who have not taken NUR 10300 may choose to take a challenge exam to demonstrate competency in calculations for pharmacology. New and returning students who have not taken NUR 10300 may take the challenge exam one time only while attending RCC. Eligible students will be notified by the Nursing Department prior to the scheduled exam. Students who pass the exam with a score of 75 or higher may choose to pay the credit for prior learning fee and receive credit and not take the course. Credit is recorded on the student’s transcript and identified with “CPL” instead of a grade.
