About the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Program

This program provides training in clinical procedures used by entry-level Medical Assistants working in hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices, and other healthcare settings. Medical Assistants have always been critical employees in the healthcare system, but they are becoming even more critical as the industry expands to support technological advances and the population ages. MAs are multi-skilled allied healthcare professionals who may administer medications, assist with minor procedures, record vital signs, take medical histories, prepare patients and rooms for examinations, handle laboratory specimens, provide patient education, and much more. The program also includes resume, interview preparation, and job placement.

This program prepares the student to pass the following industry certification: National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA).

About the Combined Certified Medical Assistant/Phlebotomy Program

This course is an overview of medical functions of a medical assistant, including examinations, medical terminology, diagnostic testing methods: vital signs, lab techniques, drawing blood, and EKG. The course clarifies the tasks that is within the medical assistant’s scope of practice. Upon completion of the course, students should successfully attain all clinical medical assisting competencies. Students will be prepared to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) & the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) accredited by the National Healthcareer Association.

Credit for Prior Learning

Students who hold a current certification are eligible to earn college credits through credit for prior learning. A fee of 40% of tuition per credit is charged for the credit and students do not need to take the class.

Course Description: 
Medical terminology is the framework for effective communication among all levels of health care workers. The language used in medicine and healthcare will be studied to include word roots, prefixes, and suffixes as well as proper pronunciation, spelling, abbreviations, and word building. An overview of bodily systems, structure and functions, diagnostic and procedural terms, and terms related to illness/disease and health/wellness will be covered.

This course explores a variety of options available for careers in the healthcare industry. Students will be exposed to a broad range go roles and will discuss the scope of practice of the variety of positions they will encounter as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. Students will be prepared to evaluate career options that best need their interests and career goals. Guest lecturers will be utilized to augment the scope of many specialized roles within a variety of healthcare settings.
